Buying a home is a huge investment and a rite of passage into adulthood. Buying a house is a huge commitment because it means you’ll be living in the same place for the foreseeable future, at least until your mortgage is paid off.
However, there is one couple who have devised an ingenious plan to avoid the sedentary lifestyle that comes with homeownership. The British couple didn’t think buying a house was a good investment because they liked to travel so much. Additionally, they were very concerned that Brexit would affect the value of their investment.
Instead, they decided to invest in a home that would allow them the flexibility to take trips whenever they pleased and the privacy to call it their own. At first, they shopped around for recreational vehicles, but nothing they saw was ideal.
After putting their search on hold for a while, one day Martin made a joke that would change the course of their lives forever.
Martin and Iona were having a few beers when Martin began to reflect on the ways in which Americans differ from Europeans. In their shoes, what would a typical American couple do? Martin joked that they could just buy a “big American truck” and live in it.
But Iona wasn’t the least bit amused. Instead, she gave it considerable thought, and it gradually started to make sense to her. She praised Martin’s idea as one of his best for the couple. The couple quickly went online to check out what was up for sale and wound up purchasing a used bread delivery truck for $4,670.
They made an instant purchase of it.
They bought a huge truck and immediately began fantasizing about how they could convert it into their ideal home. A final budget of $25,000 was established after two weeks of meticulous planning, sketching, and cost estimating.
Martin was a professional handyman, so he was confident in his ability to put the house together, while Iona handled the decor. They took four months off from work to put in all of their time transforming their truck into a home.
They were able to work well together, and the result of their efforts was a converted space that was simply breathtaking.
The truck has the windows and door of a recreational vehicle (RV), but the chassis of a truck, giving it an odd appearance from the outside. But the inside is stunning.
The kitchen is the first thing you’ll see when you walk in, and it has all the hallmarks of a high-end establishment: ample cabinetry, a stainless steel sink and appliances that look like they came straight out of a professional kitchen.
The living room is conveniently located next to the kitchen, and it features a wood-burning fireplace for cold evenings. The L-shaped couch can be pulled out to make a bed when needed. The sofa bed, however, is not for the couple but rather for guests.
The couple opts to bunk up in the upper floor. Their bedroom is up a short set of stairs. It’s not huge, but there are people who pay much more for much less. Their bathroom is the tiniest room in the house. The sink, toilet, and shower are all contained within the same cramped space.
Iona added some of her own flair by way of hand-painted illustrations.
Martin and Iona decided to maximize their home’s potential not long after they had finished the renovations. They climbed aboard their mobile mansion on wheels and set sail for France.
Now that they’ve found their special place in Europe, they can spend each day exploring the continent’s mountains, beaches, and cultural diversity before returning to it each night.
